Baimtec developed a proprietary refractory coating for shell system which results in the thinnest alpha case in the world. Alpha case is extremely hard layer of an oxygen-rich brittle alpha phase as a result of titanium's extremely reactive nature with almost all materials at high temperature. This layer must be removed by machining, chemical milling or other mechanical means prior to placing a part in service because the presence of alpha case reduces fatigue strength and ductility.
